PROJECT TYPE

Ultra-Sonic Pulse Velocity Test

Project Description

Proficient Skills Engineers Limited was commissioned to undertake an Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) investigation on the SJ3 structure base and plinth at the Olkaria Geothermal Power Plant. The reinforced concrete base and plinth are designed to support and host critical power generation equipment, including the turbine and generator units.

Following the completion of construction works, visual inspections revealed the presence of honeycombing in several areas of the concrete base and plinth. Honeycombing in concrete may indicate inadequate compaction, poor concrete placement, segregation, or insufficient vibration during casting, which can adversely affect the structural integrity and durability of the concrete elements.

Consequently, a non-destructive evaluation using the Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) method was carried out to assess the quality, uniformity, and integrity of the concrete in the affected areas and to identify any zones of potentially defective or deteriorated concrete. The findings from this investigation provide valuable information for assessing the suitability of the structure for service and for recommending any necessary remedial measures.

Execution Strategy

Phased construction planning, strict safety management, quality control systems, and integrated engineering coordination ensured timeline and cost certainty.
